FAU Students Complain About Poor Cell Service on University Campus

FAU's University Press has reported that students continue to complain about poor cellphone reception in dorms on campus, and that the University is not addressing concerns.

Some students have said that they have been dealing with cellphone signal problems for over 2 years.  Some students have even taken it upon themselves to contact their local politicians to help solve the problem.  The Department of Housing has claimed that it has not control over cellphone reception.  Students complaining do not feel that they are being heard.

CellAntenna Corporation and its affiliate CA Wireless work with educational institutions to help boost cellphone signal in areas of weak or no reception.  Click here to learn about our solutions for colleges and universities.

CellAntenna Issues Statement to the FAA Regarding Cell phones on Airplanes

*CellAntenna Corporation OFFICIAL STATEMENT TO THE FAA REGARDING CELL PHONES ON AIRPLANES*

Dear Sirs:

CellAntenna’s recommendation is to not allow the use of cell phones on airplanes, as cell phones are the #1 devices used by terrorists for the connection to Improvised Explosive Devices.  This use poses a definite threat to the safety of the passengers during inflight conditions where a terrorist may, through third parties knowingly or unknowingly, arrange a device on an airplane that can be detonated by a phone call received by the cell phone connected to the device.  Other forms of detonation may include the ability to explode the Lithium Ion Cobalt battery on the cell phone itself, which may puncture the fuselage.  The detonation also releases deadly carcinogens toxic Lithium gases into the plane’s air system, creating a chemical weapon.

According to our calculations, the cell phone output signal levels at full power do not pose any immediate threats to instrumentation within the cabin, since most cell phone power levels are limited to less than 20 dBm.  However, a cell phone used by the pilots may cause some interference (if any) due to the proximity of equipment.  Our findings indicate that the cell phone power levels at 1 meter from the antenna are at a maximum of -10 dBm of output power (1/10000 of a watt).  This is confirmed since many people elect not to turn off their cell phones in flight, or forget to, and to date there has yet to be a provable accident linked to the use of a cell phone on board the aircraft.

There are alternate forms of communication on board an aircraft to accomplish what a cell phone can provide.  Currently, several carriers have onboard Wi-Fi and most users connected to SKYPE services can in fact send out text messages and emails without the need of the cell phone.  As improvements to the Wi-Fi capability of equipment on aircraft progresses, calls may be placed using VOIP services without the need of the cell phone.  Therefore, the need of instant communication with the cell phone is not essential.

Should the FAA decide that cell phone use onboard aircrafts be allowed, we recommend the following precautions be introduced to limit the ability of terrorist activities:

  1. The cell phone service provider, or provider of equipment should insure that no incoming calls can be received by any cell phone used on an airplane.  This would limit the ability to remotely detonate an IED.
  2. Users of Cell phones should register their hardware (IMEI) and subscription number (IMSI) with the provider of service.  The service provider would not allow any change to the hardware configuration without registration.
  3. The use of Lithium Ion Cobalt batteries should be prohibited. Instead, a non-lethal Lithium Ion Phosphate battery should be used. This would limit the ability to detonate the battery onboard an aircraft.
  4. A failsafe mechanism should be put into place whereby the FAA / ATC / Pilot can disable immediately the system autonomously.  In times of crisis, immediate shutdown of the system nationwide can occur.
  5. The use of a cell phone in the bathrooms should be prohibited.  A simple detector can be placed to warn the pilot of this activity.  Again, this is to insure that no hidden means of using the cell phone is accomplished.

In conclusion, we believe that use of cell phones on airplanes in flight is currently too dangerous and should not be allowed.  A study risk analysis concerning the ability of cell phones to be used by terrorists needs to be undertaken prior to the consideration of this policy.

Best regards,
Howard Melamed
President / CEO

Cellphones and Brain Tumors

Forbes magazine published a report this month about the scientific link between cellphones and brain tumors, due to the amount of radiation that emits from a single cellphone or smartphone.

Click here to read the article.

Suggestions for reducing the amount of radiation emitted by cellphones include:

  1. Use a hands-free headset to create distance between your body and the cellphone.
  2. Avoid areas where there is weak cellphone signal. When the cellphone works harder to reach a tower, a greater amount of radiation is emitted.
  3. Use a cellphone antenna booster or repeater to boost signal and therefore eliminate the amount of radiation connected to the phone.

Illegal Cellphones Cost UK over $30k Annually for Storage

The BBC reported this week that the UK spends over $30,000 per year to store illegal cellphones confiscated in correctional facilities.  Click here to read the article:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-19597010.

The phones, which are the newest form of contraband in prisons, are often found during raids.  The fines of storing the phones, which are returned to the prisoners upon release, is left to the taxpayers.  Several government officials are now calling for an end to the practice.

CA Wireless and CJAM.com, subsidiaries of CellAntenna Corporation, work with prisons worldwide to combat illegal cellphones.  Through detection, managed access, and jamming, prison officials are able to control communication by inmates.  Visit CJAM.com to learn more about solutions for correctional facilities.

Illegal Cell Phones Used in Prison Guard Hostage Situation

Cell Phones on Planes and the FAA

There is much discussion surrounding the topic of Cell Phones on airplanes since Congress has asked the FAA to investigate the effects pertaining to cell phone use on planes.

Click here to read the article published by Politico.com.

The FAA has opened the debate for public opinion, and CellAntenna Corporation will be issuing our opinion.

CellAntenna formerly contested the assumption that cell phone use would interfere with a plane's overall functionality.  If that were the case, cell phones would not be allowed on airplanes at all.  Click here to read CellAntenna's opinion.

As we formulate our opinion about cell phone use via base station being permitted on aircraft, we will ask relevant questions with regard to the alternate ways in which phones could be used that do not suit the general public while flying.

CellAntenna Corporation Introduces CJAM-JDECK Surgical Jamming System

Coral Springs, FL – CellAntenna Corporation, experts in combating cell phone threats, has introduced its latest product, the CJAM-JDECK Low-Jamming System, for use by customs and immigration departments worldwide to fight illegal activities conducted via cell phones.

The CJAM-JDECK is a low-level jammer that is installed under-the-counter for use in customs and immigration departments.  The jammer is designed to prevent illegal cell phone activity in lines at the airport at customs and immigration points where cell phones are prohibited.  As lengthy lines, illegal immigrants, substances and contraband have become increasingly problematic for customs and immigration officials, CellAntenna has created a product solution.

“Illegal use of cell phones has become an increasing pandemic,” stated CellAntenna Corporation CEO, Howard Melamed.  “The challenge that our customs and immigrations officials face is the amount of time required to enforce prohibited cell phone use.”

CellAntenna’s solution is surgically placed in the area so that it is capable of blocking calls and text messages by those being processed in customs and immigrations, but allows communication by employees and law enforcement.  The system remains idle through a low-power RF signature that affects only cell phones in the immediate area without affecting law enforcement communication.  The jammer only powers on when cell phone use is detected by a text or call being made or received.  The unit is easy and adjustable and is able to notify an agent of prohibted use and the agent is able to immediately jam the cell signal.  The unit has three capabilities: detect-only, detect-jam (jams only when call/text in progress), or full-jam, depending on varying scenarios.

CellAntenna’s proven systems are currently used by U.S. Federal governments and agencies, as well as international customers where jamming is legal.  Cell phone jamming is prohibited for general use in the United States as a result of the 1934 Communications act, which prohibits interference with RF signal.

CellAntenna Corporation offers a complete portfolio of cell phone detection, control and jamming solutions in order to solve cell phone threat management scenarios worldwide.

CellAntenna delivers systems integration with customized solutions according to varying technologies and price-points.

CellAntenna Corporation Response to TheVerge.com article Regarding Wi-Fi Blocking Wallpaper

CELLANTENNA RESPONSE TO TheVerge.com article: "Wi-Fi blocking wallpaper improves security without hampering cellphone coverage"

Our company, CellAntenna Corporation, executes engineered solutions to solve RF problems. Our CEO, Howard Melamed, is a Civil Engineer and an expert in the area of RF.

After reading this article, Mr. Melamed pointed out the following:

In our company's experience, RF shielding wallpaper is not a new idea, and is in line with RF resistant paint. These are interesting items, but they simply do not work - they are usually the equivalent to using aluminum foil wallpaper in terms of its ability to boost or block RF signal. The materials never block RF signal consistently. The consistency would indicate that there was an actual solution. These "quick fixes" do not.

In the past, we have incorporated wallpaper, fabric and paint to reinforce existing RF jamming and detection systems. None of these passive items are new, and none of them are truly useful by themselves against RF signal. To outfit a building to block RF is an extensive engineering task.

Radiowaves, especially those that exist in Microwave bands travel through small openings in doors, windows, ceiling tiles and duct work. They come out of electrical outlets, transfer outside of metallic conduits and radiate around window frames. Hence, the application of a simple passive material solution to a complicated problem is ineffective.

Our company has worked with the federal government and international institutions to safely and effectively implement jamming solutions. We are advocates for the legality of jamming by law enforcement to prevent the illegal use of cell phones by criminals.

This product gives the impression that boosting and blocking RF signals is cheap, fast and perfect. These three words cannot exist in the same sentence when it comes to passive jamming.

Cell Phone Jamming Needs To Be Legalized For Local And State Law Enforcement

CEO of CellAntenna cites FCC data that concludes that jamming is not a menace

(May 8, 2012) New Orleans, LA - CEO of CellAntenna Corporation, Howard Melamed, announced today at the CTIA exhibition in New Orleans that cell phone jamming needs to be legalized for state and local law enforcement to prevent criminals from using cell phones for illegal purposes.

According to public data from the FCC (http://www.fcc.gov/encyclopedia/jammer-enforcement), there were only 20 incidences of illegal cell phone jamming enforced under the provisions of the 1934 Communications Act, which allows legal jamming only by the federal government.  None of the FCC citations issued were against any law enforcement agency.  CellAntenna contends that with so few occurrences, jamming appears to be a non-issue or the FCC would take a harsher stance on prosecution.

CellAntenna has urged Congress to introduce legislation that would allow limited use of cell phone jamming equipment by local and state law enforcement and more stringent penalties to members of the public caught illegally acquiring the equipment and using it.  Jamming equipment is able to prevent the use of cell phones by criminals when police activities are ongoing, such as SWAT team operations, inside jails and prisons, and for local and state bomb disposal units.

“The need for cell phone jamming equipment by law enforcement greatly outweighs any threat of public misuse,” stated Melamed.  “Only 20 incidents of jamming were found and prosecuted?  With so few actual citations issued by the FCC for public misuse, there is no reason for the cell phone industry to be afraid of any misuse by local and state law enforcement agencies.”

CellAntenna Corporation has successfully implemented safe and controlled jamming solutions domestically and internationally, including at Cumberland Prison in Maryland as part of a federally sanctioned test by the NTIA.

Advocates Appeal to FCC to Keep Jamming Illegal by Law Enforcement - CellAntenna Disagrees.

Late last week, several groups appealed to the FCC to keep cell phone signal jamming illegal to all levels of government and law enforcement.

CellAntenna advocates legal jamming by law enforcement ONLY.  Because the FCC is incapable of policing illegal cell phone jammers, local governments should be permitted to monitor for illegal jammers and punish those who are using the jammers illegally.  In addition, police officers and SWAT teams should be permitted to jam cell signals when cell phones are being used to conduct criminal activity and endanger the general public.

Cell Phones Cannot Crash Planes

CELL PHONES CANNOT CRASH AIRPLANES

CellAntenna Says FAA is Wrong

Coral Springs, FL – CellAntenna’s CEO contested that cell phones do not interfere with airplane navigational equipment, and cell phone use during takeoffs and landings cannot crash airplanes.

FAA rules dictate that airlines force passengers to turn off cell phones during takeoffs and landings because of interference problems with navigational equipment. This ruling went into effect when tower operators complained that cell phone use on airplanes was generating havoc on systems, as cell phones contacted more than one tower and caused interference.  Older models of cell phones, like cell bag phones, emitted larger transmissions.  This has been corrected in this century, as cellular carrier software has experienced upgrades and small, low-energy pocket and smart phones have become prevalent. The FAA has not updated its rules to accommodate such cell phone progression.

“It’s ridiculous that Flight Attendants, who are not engineers, and have no knowledge of engineering make-up of planes, tell passengers to turn off their cell phone because it interferes with navigational equipment,” stated Howard Melamed, CEO of CellAntenna.  “It frightens passengers and it is unnecessary. If the FAA was right, and cell phones were dangerous, why would they even allow them on airplanes? There are reasons for keeping a cell phone off before takeoff and landing, which include making sure attention is given to safety procedures and for common courtesy.  However, since it’s almost impossible to make a call above 3500 feet, let alone at cruising altitude, keeping the cell phone on will ultimately only drain battery as it tries to reach a tower with which it cannot communicate”.

Melamed further states that CellAntenna engineers and manufactures cell phone detection equipment that is used by law enforcement on trains, in correctional facilities, and can also be used on planes, but to date no inquiries have ever been received on behalf of an airline or the FAA. “If this were truly the issue, we would know about it. “

Cell Jamming Continues to Trend as Hot Topic

Cell phone jamming has been a hot topic trending on Google this week.  At CellAntenna, we  reiterate our strong stance on cell jamming being illegal to the general public.  However, Dr. Kidder asks valid questions regarding the need for emergency situations and the ability to block cell communication, which is currently illegal.  Our opinion is that first responders and law enforcement should have the ability to block or jam cell communication in times of crisis or natural disaster.
